Tucked away in a scenic corner of Martin County is the charming coastal community of Port Salerno. This unincorporated town spans only four miles but is full of stunning sights and sounds. Keep reading to find out why Port Salerno is one of Florida’s best kept secrets.
In the 1920s, a small settlement of immigrants from the Italian city of Salerno was created on the southern shores of St. Lucie River inlet. Over time, the area increased in population and importance, with many people from the northeastern United States moving to Florida. In 1960, the town’s name was changed to Port Salerno, in order to differentiate it from its Italian namesake.
This small community was originally the hub for the South Florida commercial fishing industry. Now a working waterfront and fishing fleet provides fresh seafood to local restaurants and markets. They also supply the Port Salerno Seafood Festival, which is held on the public docks and neighborhood streets early in the year. Port Salerno is also known as the home of the World Fishing Tournaments – making it a mecca for serious fishing fans.
Today, Port Salerno is known for many things – especially its idyllic location on Manatee Pocket, a picturesque bay that extends from Port Salerno to the St. Lucie Inlet. What was once just a small fishing village is now a retreat for those who love local art, waterfront dining, fresh seafood and serene water views.
